Two cheetahs, identified as Rain and her youngster, captured an impala in Pilanesberg Game Reserve in front of a tourist van.

Cole van Rooyen, a field guide at the Lush Private Lodge in Pilanesberg National Park, captured the entire high-speed cheetah hunt.

A cheetah stalks an impala down the road.

"We had been waiting at an impala herd for 15 to 20 minutes, knowing that a cheetah named Rain and her two cubs were in the vicinity. The impala began to flee abruptly, and Quickly sped by our vehicle and into the bush. We believed the activity had moved out of the frame of our camera, but we were mistaken."

Two cheetahs pursue an Impala in the center of the road.

Impalas have adapted to coexist with big cats in Africa. They have tremendous speed and agility, being able to run at speeds of up to sixty miles per hour. They can also detect predators from a distance and communicate danger to their herd through alarm sounds due to their strong senses.

Rain is an infamous cheetah in Pilanesberg National Park, where she is one of nine cheetahs. She has had five litters of cubs at the park and is an elderly cheetah. Typically, cheetahs have an average of four litters in their lives, so this is quite an accomplishment. Rainfall has played a significant role in preserving the park's population of severely endangered cheetahs.

"The rain reversed course and pursued a young Impala past the right side of our vehicle." Just missing us by a few inches. She pounced on the impala and suffocated it, providing herself and her cubs with a much-needed meal."

Cheetahs are renowned for their extraordinary speed, agility, and hunting prowess. They can accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in few seconds. This makes them the world's fastest land creatures. Their lean, powerful physique are optimized for sprinting and rapid twists. Their lengthy tails aid in maintaining their balance while sprinting.

How long does a cheetah live?

The average lifespan of cheetahs in the wild is between 8 and 10 years.

Rain is a real survivor who has significantly aided the cheetah population in Pilanesberg National Park. Her sixth litter of cubs is evidence of her strength and resiliency, and I feel really privileged to have observed her in action. If you ever get the opportunity to visit Pilanesberg National Park, keep a watch out for Rain and her cubs; you never know what kind of extraordinary event you could see.
